Games to get started in Management 3.0:

Moving Motivators

motivation

Duration

30 to 45 Minutes

Participants

1 group of 2 people minimum

Goals

  • Individual communication
  • Discovering the motivation profile of employees

Materials

  • 1 set of “Moving Motivators” cards per participant

Rules

  • The ranking is from the least important to the most important: from left (-) to right (+).

Prerequisites

  • Place one table per team of 2.
  • 2 chairs facing one another per table.

Recommendation

Be sure to explain the purpose of each card and do not try to influence the choice of participants.  The objective is not to make value judgments about participants’ choices.

How to play

Explain the 10 intrinsic motivation factors (CHAMPFROGS) to the participants and ask them to work in teams of 2 people.

Ask participants to build their motivation profiles by placing the cards horizontally in the following order: the least important on the left and the most important on the right. No card should be at the same level as any other. Team members explain their ranking to each other.

Ask participants to consider a change in their work-life and then to imagine how this change would affect their motivation. Then teams move the cards up if this change has a positive effect on the cards or down if this change has a negative effect. When there is no effect on motivation, the card can stay in the middle. Team members explain their rankings to each other.

Ask participants to explain the impact of organizational change on their motivations.

Educational conclusion

When most of a person’s important motivational factors go down or the less important ones go up, there may be coaching work to be done.  As a team leader, you can make a summary table of all the intrinsic motivation factors of your teams to have a global view of your team’s motivation, and therefore better understand them.
